Farmington Hills City Open House

The open house will be held rain or shine, featuring family-friendly activities, visual demonstrations and community resources

 The City of Farmington Hills invites community members to experience Farmington Hills to the fullest at its Annual Citywide Open House, showcasing City departments and a variety of community resources through family-friendly activities. The Citywide Open House will be held rain or shine from 12 to 3 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 5 on the campus of Farmington Hills City Hall, located at 31555 West Eleven Mile Road at the corner of Eleven Mile and Orchard Lake Roads.

The Open House is free, including parking and shuttle services, activities for the whole family, and hot dogs and Kona Ice, while supplies last. Parking is available in the east parking lot at Oakland Community College Orchard Ridge Campus, located at, 27055 Orchard Lake Road. From there, attendees can take the free shuttle bus to City Hall. 

“Farmington Hills is a place where everyone is welcome, that’s why we’re excited for everyone to experience everything this incredible city has to offer at the Citywide Open House,” said Farmington Hills City Manager Gary Mekjian. “From fun activities to fundamental community resources, there will be something for community members of all ages and abilities at this year’s event.”

The Open House is sponsored by T-Mobile Fiber, highlighting their commitment to creating a connected community. The event will feature more than 20 community partners and a chance to meet Shannon Murphy from Mojo in the Morning, in addition to a variety of interactive family-friendly activities and resources from City departments, including:

City Clerk’s Office

  • Register to vote and get information about the Presidential Election.

Division of Public Works

  • Climb an excavator, road grader or dump truck.
  • Scribble on a snowplow with sidewalk chalk.
  • Learn about how recycling impacts the community.
  • Enter to win a street sign with your name on it.

Fire Department

  • Climb on fire trucks and try on a firefighter’s uniform.
  • Practice fire escape plans in the smoke house and run through an obstacle course.
  • Learn how to prevent fires at home and watch live kitchen and Christmas tree fire demonstrations.
  • Watch an extrication using the Jaws of Life.

Police Department

  • Ride in a police car and meet K-9 Ozzie, the City of Farmington Hills Police dog.
  • Visit the Police Department’s crime scene lab and meet with evidence technicians.
  • Tour Police headquarters and jail.
  • See a drone demonstration.
  • Interactive activities with law enforcement partners, including Michigan State Police and Oakland County Sheriff’s Office.

Special Services Department

  • Play on bouncers.
  • Create a craft to take home.
  • Learn about recreational and fitness opportunities at The Hawk, including The Hawk Makerspace and The      Hawk Theatre.

The Open House coincides with the kickoff of the National Fire Protection Association’s Fire Prevention Week which runs Oct. 6-12, with a focus on smoke alarms. The Farmington Hills Fire Department will demonstrate the importance of having working smoke detectors in every home and share best practices with families. The Farmington Hills Fire Department can install free smoke and carbon monoxide alarms for residents. Call the Farmington Hills Fire Department at 248-871-2800 to make an appointment.
